Telesat, a leading global satellite operator, has announced a multi-year agreement with Viasat, Inc. (Viasat) to provide Telesat Lightspeed low Earth orbit (LEO) services.

The collaboration will enable Viasat to integrate Telesat Lightspeed into its offerings across the aviation, maritime, enterprise, and defense sectors.

In the aviation sector, Telesat Lightspeed promises to enhance in-flight connectivity through its high-speed and low-latency broadband services. Supported by enterprise-grade service-level agreements (SLA), it is poised to enhance connectivity, reliability, and performance. Additionally, its polar region coverage will enable seamless gate-to-gate connectivity for airline passengers. Under the agreement, thousands of aircraft equipped with Viasat’s GM-40 antennas will gain access to the Telesat Lightspeed network when global services launch in 2027. Airlines can also install cutting-edge electronically steerable antennas (ESAs) to utilize the innovative Telesat Lightspeed constellation.

Daniel Goldberg, President and CEO of Telesat, highlighted, “From inception, we designed Telesat Lightspeed with advanced capabilities to meet the demanding, secure, mission-critical requirements of enterprise and government users, with unprecedented flexibility in how our customers define, deliver, manage, and monitor the quality of experience to their end users.

“We are honored to be selected by Viasat, a global leader in satellite-delivered broadband solutions, as a LEO broadband connectivity provider, further validating the unique capabilities Telesat Lightspeed offers to enhance a service provider’s value proposition in the dynamic broadband connectivity market.”

Telesat Lightspeed utilizes advanced cybersecurity measures, including a zero-trust network access architecture (ZTNA), and implements carrier ethernet (CE) standards to achieve seamless integration and interoperability.

This agreement further solidifies Telesat’s commitment to accelerating the network automation goals of service providers, addressing the growing demand for enhanced connectivity solutions.
