The year 2025 has officially been declared the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, celebrating 100 years of quantum mechanics. In line with this, investments in Canadian researchers are ensuring that the country remains at the forefront of the global race for quantum innovation.
Minister of Emergency Preparedness Sherry Romanado, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced over CAD 74 million in funding to support 107 quantum science projects.
“Canada is proud to be a global leader in quantum science and technology. By investing in top-tier research, we’re fueling innovation and keeping our country at the forefront of global competition. Today’s investment will accelerate breakthroughs in quantum computing, communications, and security, creating new opportunities for Canadian businesses and strengthening our economy,” commented Minister Champagne.
Accelerating Quantum Breakthroughs
Several newly funded projects have been announced to tackle critical challenges in quantum science and advancing quantum technologies aligned with Canada’s National Quantum Strategy. These initiatives cover key areas such as quantum algorithms and encryption, quantum communications, computing, materials, and sensing.
The projects, supported by partnerships among universities, private sectors, public institutions, and nonprofits, aim to strengthen Canada’s quantum capabilities. They will foster collaboration across Canada’s regional quantum research and innovation hubs.
Additionally, this investment will facilitate Canadian researchers in establishing international research collaborations, including joint initiatives with France’s Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR) and the US National Science Foundation. More than 500 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows across Canadian universities are expected to benefit from advanced training through these initiatives.
